Back in February 15 2017: Patent Office Hands Win in CRISPR Battle to Broad Institute
The Broad Institute has won a high-profile patent dispute with the University of California over the ownership of the gene-editing technology CRISPR, which is expected to have a major impact on the future of medicine.
The US Patent Office appeal board ruled that there was "no interference in fact" between the two parties' discoveries, meaning that the Broad Institute will retain its valuable patents for the use of CRISPR in human and animal cells. The University of California said it respected the decision, but still maintained that its researchers were the first to invent the CRISPR system.
Fast forward to September 14 2023: 10x Genomics defeats startup's attempt to end gene-analysis patent case
Delaware's federal court has rejected genomics start-up Parse Biosciences' request to dismiss a patent lawsuit launched by rival 10x Genomics and Stanford University.
The lawsuit accuses Parse's gene analysis kits of infringing patents related to 10x's Chromium single-cell genomics platform. The court ruled that the 10x patents were eligible and covered "compositions and laboratory methods". Parse has said it will "vigorously" defend itself in the case.
What patents did the court declare eligible for patent rights?
