Aug 24 2016: Why AI consolidation will create the worst monopoly in US history

Back In The Day: Edition 2023-12-29

Apple's recent acquisition of artificial intelligence (AI) startup Turi is just one example of the growing trend of major tech companies buying up AI companies. In fact, there have been a total of six major acquisitions in 2016 alone.

This consolidation is concerning because it limits competition and access to AI technology, leaving everyone else besides the acquiring companies at a disadvantage. The benefits of AI should be shared by all, but with only a few companies controlling the technology, it becomes a matter of concern.

Fast forward to Dec 05 2023: Make no mistake—AI is owned by Big Tech

The AI industry is not as competitive as it seems. The majority of startups and research labs rely on Big Tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google for their computing infrastructure and market reach. These tech giants have accumulated significant advantages over the past decade and control the development and deployment of large-scale AI.

This concentration of power poses risks to democracy, culture, and security. Without intervention, the AI market will continue to reward and entrench these dominant companies, perpetuating the problems of the surveillance business model.

How does the concentration of power in Big Tech companies impact the development, deployment, and potential risks of artificial intelligence?
