Dec 07 2019: Donald Trump claims he will ban TikTok in the US

Back In The Day: Edition 2023-12-21

President Trump has announced his intentions to ban the popular video sharing app TikTok in the US, and is against the possible sale of the app to a US company like Microsoft. Trump believes he has the power to do so through executive order or emergency economic powers, but has not provided specifics on how the ban would be implemented.

TikTok's CEO recently published an open letter stating that the company is willing to take necessary steps to ensure the app's safety and security for American users. TikTok's US General Manager has also responded, stating that the social network is "not planning on going anywhere."

New York City has joined federal agencies and over two dozen states in banning TikTok from government-owned devices due to security concerns. The city's Cyber Command determined that the app posed a threat to its technical networks. City agencies have 30 days to remove the app, and employees will lose access to TikTok.

This ban follows worries that TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, could provide Beijing with access to sensitive user data. The ban largely applies to official devices, but Montana has recently passed a law banning TikTok across the entire state. TikTok declined to comment on the ban.

How might the ban on TikTok by the New York City government impact popular city-run TikTok accounts?
