Back in Dec 29 2018: The Year in Robots, From Boston Dynamics to (RIP) Baxter
2018 has been a big year for robotics with the convergence of falling prices, better software and hardware, and increased industry demand. Boston Dynamics announced that their four-legged robot, SpotMini, will finally be available for sale next year. However, Rethink Robotics, the company behind Baxter, announced its closure, marking the retirement of the popular research platform.
DARPA also made strides in robotics with their underground robot challenge. Additionally, even robots need vacations, as researchers from Carnegie Mellon University booked their robots rooms in Airbnbs to teach them how to manipulate objects in unfamiliar environments.
Fast forward to Jul 28 2023: Aided by A.I. Language Models, Google’s Robots Are Getting Smart
Google has integrated state-of-the-art language models into its robots, making them smarter and more capable of understanding and problem-solving. This breakthrough in robotics combines the power of artificial intelligence technology with robots, enabling them to manipulate and reason with objects they have never encountered before.
This new approach represents a significant shift in the way robots are built and programmed, and has the potential to revolutionize the field of robotics. While robots still have limitations in terms of dexterity, Google's use of AI language models shows promising progress towards bridging the gap between semantics and robots.
How is Google's use of A.I. language models revolutionizing the abilities and problem-solving skills of robots?
