Android smartphones are gaining market share worldwide, while Apple's iOS is losing ground, according to the latest market share numbers. Android's market share increased in the top five European markets, the U.S, and major Chinese urban areas.

The competition that Apple faces from the proliferation of low-cost Android-based gadgets is a contributing factor to this trend. The strong performance of Samsung's Galaxy S7 in the U.S. is also boosting Android. Analysts are now waiting to see if the lower-cost iPhone SE can reverse Apple's declining market share.

Apple has surpassed all Android smartphone manufacturers in market share, selling more expensive phones. According to market research firm IDC, Apple achieved an "all-time high market share" of 20.1% in 2023, beating Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo.

While Android manufacturers typically lead the market by selling cheap and midrange phones, Apple's success is attributed to its mid-to-premium range iPhones, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max being the world's bestselling phone. This highlights Apple's ability to dominate the market despite its higher price point.

Who would have thought that Apple could beat all the Android OEMs and take the number one spot in the smartphone market with their dramatically more expensive phones?
