Back in November 26 2017: People driving while playing Pokémon Go caused millions in damages in 148 days
A new study titled "Death by Pokémon Go" highlights the negative consequences of the popular augmented reality game, revealing a significant increase in accidents in Tippecanoe County, Indiana following its release.
The paper, by Purdue University economists, estimates a loss of $2 billion to $7.3 billion nationwide due to game-related crashes, including two fatalities. Analysis shows a higher incidence of accidents near Pokéstops, suggesting the game led to distracted behavior like abruptly stopping cars to play, contributing to numerous incidents.
Fast forward to June 29 2023: Niantic lays off staff and shuts down games as it focuses on Pokémon Go
Niantic, the maker of Pokémon Go, is restructuring its business, resulting in layoffs, game cancellations, and the closing of its Los Angeles studio. The company is refocusing efforts on its successful Pokémon Go game, which continues to generate significant revenue, and will be sunsetting its NBA All World and halting the production of Marvel World of Heroes.
Despite the setbacks, Niantic remains committed to the future of augmented reality and the development of other existing titles.
Will Niantic's cuts ignite a more robust future for AR gaming, or spell a retreat from its ambitious virtual playgrounds?
