Back in Oct 18 2019: Alphabet's Wing begins making first commercial drone deliveries in the US
Drone delivery company Wing, owned by Alphabet, has become the first company to get federal approval to deliver packages to customers in the United States. Working with partners FedEx Express and Walgreens, Wing's inaugural pilot will deliver a "cough and cold pack" to customers in Christianburg, Virginia.
This marks the first time a U.S. retailer, Walgreens, will deliver products to customers via drone, and FedEx will be the first logistics provider to deliver an e-commerce drone delivery with a separate shipment. The expansion of drone delivery services is an important milestone for the industry.
Fast forward to Jan 17 2024: Alphabet’s Wing unveils larger drones for heavier packages
Alphabet's Wing has unveiled a new lineup of larger drones with increased payload capacity for drone delivery. The flagship drone can handle payloads up to 2.5 pounds, with the new model capable of carrying up to five pounds. The larger drones will allow customers to place orders for more items, streamlining the delivery process.
The new drone is expected to be deployed within the next 12 months. This expansion in drone size and capacity is part of Wing's vision to implement a multimodal drone delivery model similar to ground delivery's use of different vehicle sizes for different orders.
How can the use of larger drones with increased payload capacity revolutionize the efficiency and convenience of drone delivery services?
