Oct 29 2015: Edtech's Next Big Disruption Is The College Degree

Back In The Day: Edition 2024-01-05

By 2020, the traditional college degree will start to lose its dominance as the standard measure of learning, ability, and accomplishment. With the rise of new credentials that are gaining popularity, such as online courses and certifications, there is a shift happening in how employers determine the right fit for jobs.

Technology is changing the job market and it is only natural that new ways of assessing candidates emerge. Frustration with rising college costs and the expectation of improved career prospects is contributing to this change.

A new study has found that businesses are increasingly dissatisfied with the skill sets of college-educated employees. The survey, conducted by the Freedom Economy Index, revealed that the majority of employers do not believe that higher education institutions are graduating students with the relevant skills needed in today's business community.

This indicates a need for colleges to integrate more practical, real-world training into their curricula. Furthermore, the survey found that only 10% of employers believe that a college degree makes a job candidate more hirable, with over 40% saying it actually makes them less likely to hire.

Is a college degree losing its value in the job market due to a lack of relevant skills and practical experience?
