Back in Sep 08 2018: The Pentagon plans to spend $2 billion to put more artificial intelligence into its weaponry
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) plans to invest $2 billion over the next five years in artificial intelligence (AI) systems for US weaponry. This investment aims to make AI systems more trusted and accepted by military commanders.
The move is part of the Trump administration's push to inject AI into American weaponry to better compete with Russian and Chinese military forces. While AI systems are already capable of choosing targets and firing weapons, commanders have been hesitant about surrendering control due to a lack of confidence in machine reasoning. DARPA aims to develop explainable AI systems to address this concern.

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, is collaborating with the Pentagon on various projects, including cybersecurity and preventing veteran suicide. This is a departure from OpenAI's previous policy of not providing its AI to militaries. The company is developing open-source cybersecurity software with the US Defense Department and has held discussions with the US government on assisting in the prevention of veteran suicide.
Should organizations like OpenAI be involved in developing artificial intelligence technology for military purposes?
